Mind The Gap: A Parent’s Guide To Math Assessment For Kids

Your child failed a math test. The school sends home a report saying they’re performing below grade level in mathematics.

You already knew that. What you need to know is which skill broke, and almost nothing you’ll be handed answers that question.

Why grade-level testing can’t find the gap

A fifth grade test is made of fifth grade problems. If your child’s actual problem is fraction equivalence from fourth grade, they’ll get most of the fraction questions wrong, and the test will report that they’re weak in fractions.

True, and useless. Weak in fractions covers about three years of material and a dozen distinct skills. Working on fifth grade fractions when the break is in fourth grade equivalence produces frustration and no progress, which is roughly the experience most families have with tutoring.

The gap is always below the grade being tested. So a grade-level test structurally cannot find it.

What adaptive means and why it matters

An adaptive assessment changes what it asks based on how you answer. Miss a question and it goes easier. Get it right and it goes harder. It keeps moving until it finds the boundary between what you know and what you don’t.

That’s the whole trick, and it’s why adaptive testing can find a gap three grades below where it looks. Your ninth grader misses an algebra question, the test drops to pre-algebra, they miss again, it drops to sixth grade ratios, they get those, it probes fifth grade fractions, and there it is.

A fixed test can’t do that. It asks the same questions regardless, so it can only tell you how much of the current grade your child has.

This also makes an adaptive test shorter. It skips everything it’s already confident about instead of asking forty questions to confirm something it established in three.

What a useful result looks like

What you want is a list instead of a score, percentile or grade equivalent:

  • Can multiply and divide within 100 fluently
  • Understands fractions as numbers on a number line
  • Cannot generate equivalent fractions reliably
  • Cannot add fractions with unlike denominators
  • Handles decimals to hundredths

That tells you what to do on Monday. “Performing at a 4.2 grade level” does not.

If an assessment gives you a number and a recommendation to enroll, ask for the skill list. If there isn’t one, the assessment was mostly a sales step.

What to expect from the experience

It should get hard. An adaptive test is designed to push until your child misses. If they finish saying it was easy, it didn’t find the edge, and the result is worthless. Tell them this beforehand, because a kid who thinks they’re failing a test will guess or quit.

It should also get easy. After it finds the ceiling it works down. That part is important and it’s the part that feels strange, since a ninth grader will see questions about fourth grade fractions.

No calculator. Fluency is half of what’s being measured, and a calculator hides exactly the problem you’re trying to find.

One sitting. Splitting it across days lets fatigue and mood contaminate the result.

Don’t help. Not even a hint. You are not being graded, and every hint you give buys a wrong answer later in the year.

Free quizzes and what they’re good for

Plenty of free online math quizzes exist. Most are fixed grade-level tests, which puts them in the category described above.

They’re fine for one thing: confirming a suspicion. If you think something’s wrong and want a cheap signal before spending money, run one. Just don’t expect it to locate the problem.
