Math Skills By Grade Level: What Your Child Should Know

  • Grades 3 through 5 carry the two transitions that decide whether math stays easy: multiplication and fractions.
  • Third grade is about multiplicative thinking and fractions as numbers, not as pairs of numbers.
  • Fourth grade adds multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders, and adding fractions with like denominators.
  • Fifth grade requires fractions with unlike denominators, decimal operations to hundredths, and division by two-digit divisors.
  • If a skill on this list is missing, it does not stay a small problem, because everything above it is built on top.

Most parents can tell you whether their kid is behind in reading. Almost nobody can tell you whether their kid is behind in math, because math standards are written in language nobody outside a school district uses.

So here’s the plain version for the three grades that matter most.

Why these three grades? Because elementary math is mostly counting until third grade, and then two things arrive that work completely differently. Multiplication is not repeated addition, no matter how it gets introduced, and fractions are not two whole numbers stacked up. Kids who get through grades 3 to 5 with those two ideas intact tend to be fine through algebra. Kids who don’t tend to hit a wall somewhere between pre-algebra and geometry.

End of third grade

Multiplication and division within 100, fluently. Fluently means retrieved, not calculated. Seven times eight should come back in under two seconds without a strategy. If your child is skip counting to get there, the fact isn’t fluent yet.

Understanding that multiplication and division are the same relationship. A child who knows 6 times 7 equals 42 should be able to answer 42 divided by 7 without starting over. If they treat it as a fresh problem, they memorized facts rather than the relationship.

Fractions as numbers. This is the big one. Your third grader should be able to put one half, one third and one fourth on a number line in the right order. If they say one fourth is bigger than one third, they’re reading two separate numbers instead of one quantity.

Area as rows and columns. Area should connect to multiplication, not be a separate formula to memorize. Ask them why a 4 by 6 rectangle has 24 squares. If the answer is “because you multiply,” push once more. The answer you want involves four rows of six.

Quick check: Hand them 8 times 7, then 56 divided by 8, then ask which is bigger, two thirds or three fourths. Three questions, two minutes, and you’ll know where you stand.

End of fourth grade

Multi-digit multiplication. Two-digit by two-digit, reliably. Whether they use the standard algorithm or an area model matters less than whether they can explain why it works.

Division with multi-digit dividends, including remainders. And they should be able to say what the remainder means in a word problem. Twenty-three kids into buses that hold four is not five point seven five buses.

Fraction equivalence. One half equals two fourths equals three sixths. They should be able to generate equivalents, not just recognize them.

Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number. Like denominators only at this stage. Unlike denominators is a fifth grade skill and pushing it early is a common source of confusion.

Decimals to hundredths, connected to fractions. They should know 0.25 and one quarter are the same number wearing different clothes.

Quick check: Ask for 34 times 26 on paper, then ask them to write three fractions equal to one half, then ask what 0.7 is as a fraction.

End of fifth grade

Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This is the skill that most directly predicts algebra performance, and it’s the one I’d check first on any struggling middle schooler.

Multiplying fractions, and dividing in simple cases. They should be able to explain why multiplying by one half makes a number smaller, since that’s the first time multiplication doesn’t behave the way they expect.

Decimal operations to hundredths. All four operations, fluently.

Division with two-digit divisors.

Volume as a three-dimensional attribute. Not a formula. They should understand that a rectangular prism holds a certain number of unit cubes.

Order of operations and writing numerical expressions. The bridge into algebra starts here.

Quick check: Ask for one half plus one third. Then ask for one half times one third, and have them explain why the second answer is smaller than both numbers. That explanation is the whole ballgame.

What to do when something on this list is missing

Two rules.

Go back, don’t push forward. If your fifth grader can’t add fractions with unlike denominators, doing more fifth grade fraction homework will not fix it. The problem is upstream, usually in equivalence from fourth grade or in fractions-as-numbers from third. Find the actual floor and rebuild from there.

Fix one thing at a time. Missing skills feel enormous to a parent looking at a whole grade level of standards. In practice a specific kid is usually missing three or four specific skills, not a whole year. Identify those, fix them, and the downstream problems clear up on their own, often faster than you’d expect.

The trouble is finding them. You cannot reliably locate a gap by watching your child do homework, because homework is all current-grade material and the gap is somewhere behind it.
